Hypoglycemia

There are several possible causes for hypoglycemia. Simply stated it is low blood sugar, but that's where simplicity ends. I have linked you to Mayo Clinic's explanation, with causes and treatment, as theirs is one of the best explanations on the web, and I doubt if I could do better. The book above, Hypoglycemia for dummies, is not one I have read, but I have used the "For Dummies" books for several things and have always found them a good resource.

I do want to add one thing, however, if you feel you or any of your family are suffering from hypoglycemia, or have been diagnosed with it, do not neglect your Dr.s appointments. There are some who believe that hypoglycemia is a precursor to Diabetes Mellites. Whether this is the case or not, hypoglycemia is an indicator that something is wrong with the metabolic system in the patient.

Normally, the body balances out the amount of insulin (lowering your blood sugar) and glucagon (raising your blood sugar) in your system according to how much you eat and how much you exercise. If this balance is "off", and the body is not responding with glucagon when your blood sugar dips, then you will need to become aware of the symptoms, (shakiness, intense hunger, weakness, palor, rapid heart rate) and carry a quick sugar snack with you. Here you also need to be aware that you should always take in a protein with the sugar, as the sugar can elevate your blood sugar too quickly and you will "bounce" and your blood sugar will dip again. Take in cheese or some cold meat or a boiled egg, or better yet, some peanut butter, as the protein and fats in the peanut butter metabolize much more slowly and will "anchor" your blood sugar, stopping the swings.

Be aware, these are only temporary measures!! See your Doctor if you are having these problems. Do not just follow the advice of someone on the internet!!!!!
